Two people have died following a fatal road crash on the R101 between Mokopane and Mookgophong in Limpopo. The accident occurred on Saturday afternoon, causing major traffic disruptions along the busy route.

According to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, the collision involved two vehicles and happened under circumstances that are still being investigated. Initial reports suggest that one vehicle may have lost control, leading to a head-on collision.Paramedics and emergency services were dispatched to the scene immediately after receiving reports of the crash. Unfortunately, both victims were declared dead on the scene. Authorities have not yet released their identities, pending notification of their families.

Department spokesperson Vongani Chauke confirmed the fatalities and urged motorists to exercise extreme caution on provincial roads. “Two lives have been lost in this tragic accident. We are urging drivers to adhere to speed limits, avoid dangerous overtaking, and stay vigilant to prevent further loss of life,” Chauke said.

The Limpopo Department of Transport has raised concerns about the increasing number of accidents on the R101, which is known for its heavy traffic and sharp curves. The route serves as an alternative to the N1 highway and often carries high volumes of passenger and freight vehicles.

Traffic police temporarily closed a section of the road to allow emergency personnel to clear the wreckage and conduct an on-site investigation.
