Trump Moves to Place D.C. Police Under Federal Control, Deploys National Guard

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro has described President Donald Trump’s decision to temporarily place the D.C. police under federal control and deploy the National Guard as “a first step” toward addressing violent crime in the nation’s capital.
Speaking Monday on Fox News’ Hannity, Pirro said the move signalled a strong federal stance against rising violence in Washington, D.C. “We are now in the process of bringing to the attention of law-abiding citizens, not just in D.C., but throughout the country, that we’re not going to tolerate crime that is out of control in the nation’s capital,” she told host Sean Hannity.
Pirro invoked historical references, calling Washington “the shining city on the hill” — a phrase often used by former President Ronald Reagan — and contrasted its symbolic status with the crime issues it currently faces. The deployment of federal resources in D.C. has historically been a sensitive political move, with past instances sparking debates over local autonomy versus federal oversight.
Supporters of the decision argue it will help restore law and order in the capital, while critics have warned of potential overreach and tension between federal and local authorities.
The duration of the federal control and National Guard presence has not yet been specified. The White House is expected to release further details in the coming days.
