“We’re not scared of him” – MK MP Nomvalo hits back at Malema

Tensions flared during the parliamentary ad hoc committee hearing on General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s allegations, as Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema and uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party MP Sibonelo Nomvalo exchanged sharp words in a heated moment that disrupted proceedings.

In a video circulating on social media, Julius Malema is heard saying, “If you are challenged and the mind is feeling pain now, it’s none of our problem. If your party sent people with weak minds and concentration span, it’s the party’s problem. Listen, Minister Senzo Mchunu is speaking now.” His remarks appeared to be aimed at fellow MPs who had interjected during Mchunu’s testimony before the committee.

Moments later, MK Party MP Sibonelo Nomvalo hit back, calling for order and accusing Malema of misconduct. “No, let’s address that behaviour, Chair. Let’s address that hooliganism. We are not scared of the man, we can address him, we are not scared of him,” Nomvalo said, demanding the committee chairperson intervene.

The exchange briefly halted the sitting as the chair struggled to restore decorum. The ad hoc committee, which is probing allegations of corruption, infiltration, and political interference within the South African Police Service (SAPS), has seen increasing political tension as high-profile witnesses, including suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, continue to testify.

Observers say the confrontation reflects deep divisions within Parliament and growing hostility between opposition parties amid explosive revelations about internal police battles and political interference.

The hearings are expected to continue this week, with senior SAPS officials and political leaders still to take the stand.
