“We won’t be part of DA’s gimmicks” — Mashaba fires back over Lesufi motion

ActionSA in Gauteng has distanced itself from the Democratic Alliance’s proposed motion of no confidence (MONC) against Premier Panyaza Lesufi, calling it “a political gimmick.”

ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba said his party would not participate in what he described as an ill-conceived and poorly strategised move by the DA. He emphasised that if the opposition were serious about unseating Lesufi, they would first seek collaboration with parties that have the necessary numbers in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.

“If serious about the removal of Lesufi, ActionSA does not have the numbers to pass this frivolous MONC. Funzi has advised them to engage parties with the required numbers, such as the EFF and MK Party,” Mashaba said. “We are not going to be part of political gimmicks of the DA.”

The DA has accused Lesufi of poor governance and failing to address corruption, crime, and service delivery challenges in Gauteng. However, ActionSA’s stance exposes growing divisions within the opposition bloc, particularly among parties hoping to present a united front against the ANC.

Political analysts say ActionSA’s decision reflects its desire to project independence and avoid being seen as an appendage of the DA. “Mashaba is positioning ActionSA as a party of principle, not opportunism,” said political commentator Sandile Swana. “By refusing to back the motion, he is signalling that Lesufi’s removal must be strategic, not symbolic.”

The development underscores the fragile nature of coalition politics in Gauteng, where opposition parties often clash over tactics despite sharing similar goals.
