Two inmates who tried to shield the officials were stabbed multiple times and succumbed to their injuries,” Nxumalo said.
Emergency medical personnel and prison healthcare staff rushed to the scene, but both inmates were declared dead shortly after being found. Several others, including a correctional officer, sustained minor injuries and received on-site medical attention. The DCS described the attack as “deeply disturbing” and praised the bravery of the inmates who lost their lives protecting officials. “Their actions demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness under extremely dangerous circumstances,” the department stated.
Police have since launched an investigation into the incident, with detectives from the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Serious and Violent Crimes Unit working alongside correctional investigators to establish the motive and identify the perpetrators. No arrests had been confirmed by Wednesday morning, though several suspects have reportedly been isolated for questioning.
Nxumalo emphasized that safety within correctional facilities remains a top priority. “Security has been reinforced at Pollsmoor, and an internal inquiry is underway to determine how weapons were brought into the facility,” he added.
Pollsmoor Prison, one of South Africa’s largest and most overcrowded correctional centres, has long faced challenges of gang-related violence and inmate unrest. Human rights advocates have repeatedly raised concerns about the dangerous conditions faced by both inmates and staff.
Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola has reportedly been briefed on the matter and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased inmates. “We condemn any form of violence within our correctional system. Every life lost is one too many, and we will ensure that those responsible face the full might of the law,” Lamola said in a statement.
The Department of Correctional Services has also confirmed that counselling services have been made available to affected staff and inmates. The investigation into the stabbing attack continues.
