ANC Treasurer-General Dr Gwen Ramokgopa has firmly denied allegations linking her to alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, whose name has recently surfaced at the ongoing Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. The claims, which began circulating on social media platforms X and WhatsApp, accuse Ramokgopa of benefiting from illicit funds connected to Matlala’s alleged criminal network.

In a statement released over the weekend, Ramokgopa expressed deep concern over what she described as a “malicious and baseless smear campaign” aimed at undermining her integrity and public standing. “I am deeply perturbed by these allegations. They are completely false and intended to damage my reputation as well as the work of the ANC Treasurer-General’s office,” she said.Ramokgopa added that she has never had any personal, professional, or financial dealings with Matlala and welcomed any formal investigation to clear her name. “I have nothing to hide. I stand ready to cooperate with any lawful process to put this matter to rest,” she stated.

Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has been a central figure in recent testimony before the Madlanga Commission, where allegations of police corruption, political interference, and organised criminal infiltration into state structures have dominated proceedings. The emergence of Ramokgopa’s name in online discussions has sparked speculation and heated debate, with some observers warning of coordinated disinformation campaigns aimed at destabilising political figures.

Political analysts say Ramokgopa’s swift response was crucial to maintaining credibility amid growing public distrust in leadership. “At a time when the ANC is under intense scrutiny, any hint of association with corruption can have significant political consequences,” one commentator noted.

The ANC has yet to issue an official statement on the allegations, but party insiders suggest that the matter will be addressed internally to prevent further reputational damage.
