“They were friends,” says witness linking Senzo Mchunu to murder-accused KT Molefe

Former Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) member Captain Maxwell Wanda has revealed before the Madlanga Commission that he was informed about a close association between murder-accused Katiso “KT” Molefe and suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.
Wanda told the commission that the information came from Lehasa Moloi, Molefe’s bodyguard, during an interaction that raised concerns about political connections within criminal investigations. “I was told by Moloi that KT Molefe and Minister Mchunu were friends,” Wanda testified, adding that this information was never officially recorded in the investigation report but was widely discussed among task team members.
The testimony adds another layer to the ongoing inquiry, which is probing allegations of political interference and corruption within the South African Police Service (SAPS). The Madlanga Commission has already heard explosive claims implicating high-ranking officials in attempts to influence investigations into political killings and organised crime.
Wanda’s statement comes amid mounting scrutiny over the integrity of the PKTT, which Mchunu controversially disbanded earlier this year — a move that has since drawn widespread criticism from Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee and civil society groups.
Security analyst Andy Mashaile told Opera News that Wanda’s testimony could further complicate matters for Mchunu. “If there is evidence suggesting a personal relationship between the minister and an accused in a murder case, it raises questions about motive and possible interference,” he said.
The commission is expected to call additional witnesses, including former investigators and senior police officials, to clarify the alleged links and their implications for the ongoing cases.
