ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has come out strongly in defence of President Cyril Ramaphosa, praising his leadership in tackling corruption and criminality in Tembisa.

Speaking at a community engagement in Gauteng, Mbalula said the President’s decisive action against those implicated in corruption demonstrates that the ANC government remains committed to accountability.

“President Ramaphosa is hard at work,” Mbalula declared. “Criminals who were stealing from here in Tembisa, killing our people — President Ramaphosa sent the SIU after them. They must be arrested, those criminals!” he said to loud applause from the crowd. The remarks come amid ongoing investigations by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) into irregular contracts and financial misconduct at the City of Ekurhuleni and Tembisa Hospital. The probes have already led to several suspensions and disciplinary actions, with the SIU vowing to recover millions of rands in stolen public funds.Mbalula’s comments also signal the ANC’s renewed efforts to reclaim public trust ahead of upcoming elections by aligning itself with the President’s anti-corruption stance. “No one is above the law. Whether in government or in business, if you have stolen from our people, you must face justice,” Mbalula added.

Observers say the ANC is using the Tembisa case to demonstrate that the party is serious about reform and cleaning up its image. As investigations continue, communities like Tembisa remain hopeful that justice will be served and that service delivery will improve once corrupt networks are dismantled.
