Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker says he would welcome the opportunity to face Kaizer Chiefs in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages, adding that it would make for an exciting South African showdown on the continental stage.

“In terms of traveling and knowing the opposition? Yes, I wouldn’t mind having them in our group,” Barker said when asked about the possibility of meeting Chiefs in the next phase of the competition.

Barker’s Stellenbosch side has been one of the standout performers in South African football this season, combining solid defensive organisation with quick transitional play. Their progress in continental competition has also signalled the club’s growing ambition to challenge on multiple fronts.Facing a local rival like Kaizer Chiefs, Barker believes, would not only ease logistical challenges but also give local supporters a rare chance to see two South African clubs competing at that level. “It would be good for the supporters, good for the country, and good for football,” he added.

Kaizer Chiefs, meanwhile, are also looking to make a strong impression after a period of rebuilding under new technical leadership. A potential clash between the two sides would draw massive interest, pitting Barker’s disciplined and cohesive outfit against the glamour and pedigree of the Amakhosi.

Football pundits say a local derby in the group stages would intensify competition while providing both teams with valuable experience and exposure on the continental scene. As both clubs await the official draw, anticipation continues to grow among fans who are eager to see South African teams making their mark beyond the domestic league.
