‘Step down, Mchunu’ — Dennis Bloem joins growing calls for minister to resign
Activists and Citizens Forum Spokesperson Dennis Bloem has called for the immediate resignation of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, saying he is unfit to serve in the cabinet. Bloem’s remarks come in the wake of Mchunu’s testimony before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee, which has drawn widespread criticism from the public.
Bloem said Mchunu’s performance before the committee exposed a lack of leadership and accountability within the Police Ministry. “Senzo Mchunu is not fit to be a cabinet minister. His testimony was an embarrassment and further confirmed that he does not have the capacity to lead such a critical portfolio,” Bloem stated.
He added that South Africans deserve a police minister who is transparent, credible, and committed to rooting out corruption within the criminal justice system. “Mchunu has failed to inspire confidence. Instead, his actions and words have deepened mistrust in the police and government,” Bloem said.
The Ad Hoc Committee is probing allegations of political interference and criminal infiltration within the South African Police Service (SAPS), including the controversial disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team in KwaZulu-Natal. Mchunu has been at the centre of the storm after being accused of making questionable directives without sufficient consultation.
Bloem urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to take decisive action, saying keeping Mchunu in office undermines the integrity of the cabinet. “The people of South Africa are tired of excuses and weak leadership. The time has come for real accountability,” he added.
