The South African Police Service (SAPS) has justified its opposition to the bail application of alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, citing serious safety concerns for both witnesses and investigators. SAPS National Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that releasing Matlala on bail would have endangered key individuals involved in the high-profile case.

“Vusimuzi Matlala’s release on bail would have endangered the lives of witnesses and the investigation team,” said Mathe. “We have beefed up security for our investigating team to ensure their safety as the case continues.”

Matlala, who faces multiple criminal charges including corruption and intimidation, has been at the centre of political controversy following revelations at the ongoing Madlanga Commission. Testimonies have linked him to senior police officials and alleged interference in investigations involving political killings.

According to SAPS insiders, the decision to increase security follows intelligence suggesting possible attempts to intimidate or eliminate witnesses expected to testify against Matlala. Law enforcement agencies are said to be monitoring communications closely and have relocated some witnesses to undisclosed locations.

The case has drawn widespread public attention due to Matlala’s alleged connections to high-ranking political and security figures. Civil society groups have urged authorities to ensure transparency and protect those involved in exposing organised criminal networks within the state.Matlala remains in custody as the investigation progresses, with prosecutors indicating that additional charges could be added based on new evidence.
