Royal family split deepens as Prince Thokozani fights Ramaphosa’s recognition of King
TheTabernaclestudio.opera.comPrince Thokozani Zulu, spokesperson for the faction of the Zulu royal family supporting Prince Simakade Zulu’s bid to ascend the throne, says they are exploring several legal avenues to challenge the ruling of the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA). The SCA recently upheld President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to officially recognise King Misuzulu kaZwelithini as the rightful monarch of the Zulu nation.
Prince Thokozani described the court’s ruling as a “grave injustice” and confirmed that the group is considering escalating the matter to the Constitutional Court, among other options. “We will not allow this grave injustice to go unchallenged,” he said. “We are exploring all available legal and constitutional avenues to ensure that the truth prevails and that Prince Simakade’s claim is fairly heard.”
The long-running royal dispute has divided the Zulu royal household since the passing of King Goodwill Zwelithini in 2021. Prince Simakade, the King’s elder brother, has maintained that he is the rightful heir to the throne, a position that has been consistently disputed by supporters of King Misuzulu.
The Supreme Court of Appeal’s decision was viewed as a major victory for King Misuzulu, confirming that President Ramaphosa acted within his constitutional powers when recognising him. However, Prince Simakade’s backers have accused the state of bias and of ignoring key traditional protocols that they claim were not followed during the succession process.
Analysts say another court battle could further prolong the royal impasse and deepen divisions within the Zulu monarchy. Still, Prince Thokozani insists their fight is far from over. “We believe justice will ultimately be served, no matter how long it takes,” he said.
