A witness before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has confirmed that a R500,000 contribution from murder-accused businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala was used to purchase flight tickets and accommodation for ANC members attending the party’s January 8 statement.

The testimony has reignited debate over alleged financial links between Matlala and senior ANC officials, with some members of Parliament describing the revelations as “deeply troubling.” The witness, whose identity cannot be disclosed for safety reasons, detailed how the funds were allegedly processed through intermediaries and used for logistical arrangements tied to the party’s anniversary celebrations.

According to the testimony, the transaction was framed as a “sponsorship” for travel and lodging, but questions have emerged over whether it breached party funding regulations or constituted improper influence. The ANC has not yet issued an official response to the claim.

Political analysts say the revelation could place further pressure on Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, whose relationship with Matlala has been the subject of growing scrutiny at the commission. Matlala, who faces several criminal charges including murder and corruption, has been repeatedly linked to high-ranking police and political figures through various testimonies.

Meanwhile, civil society groups have called on law enforcement agencies to investigate whether any laws governing political donations were violated. “This is not just about internal party affairs — it’s about transparency and accountability in public life,” said one advocacy group representative.

The commission continues to hear evidence on allegations of criminal infiltration and political interference within the South African Police Service. Further witnesses are expected to testify on the source and handling of funds linked to Matlala.
