Police forced me to point out where Senzo Meyiwa died – Key witness hints out in court

During the ongoing Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, accused Shadrack Sibiya gave a harrowing account of alleged torture at the hands of police officers investigating the soccer star’s death.
Sibiya testified that officers identified as Bongani and Mogane forced him to accompany them to the scene of Meyiwa’s killing, demanding that he point out where the late Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper had been shot. He told the court he repeatedly insisted he did not know where Meyiwa had died, nor was he present during the incident.
“Bongani and Mogane told me they wanted me to show them where Senzo Meyiwa died. I informed them I don’t know where he died. I was not even present when he died,” Sibiya said. “They then said I will point out, and I replied I don’t know where Senzo Meyiwa died. They told me to sit down in that municipal area. When I said I don’t know, they placed a plastic bag over my face. I was unable to breathe.”
The chilling testimony adds to claims by the accused that police used coercive and violent methods to extract confessions in the high-profile murder case.
The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, now in its second phase, has been marred by allegations of torture, witness tampering, and cover-ups, with defense lawyers insisting that the accused were framed to protect powerful individuals.
As the trial resumes, the court is expected to hear further cross-examination from both the defense and the state regarding the alleged use of unlawful interrogation tactics.
