Police Arrested Over 50 Illegal Immigrants And Another 20 people For Drunk Driving In The Night

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has once again stamped his authority on crime-fighting with a powerful display of policing might during a late-night high-density operation across Honeydew and Cosmo City. The no-nonsense crackdown, which unfolded under flashing blue lights and roaring police sirens left more than 70 suspects in handcuffs from drunk drivers to undocumented foreign nationals.
The operation, conducted in the early hours of Saturday morning, brought together a formidable multidisciplinary team comprising the South African Police Service (SAPS) the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) the Department of Home Affairs, and community policing structures.
By sunrise, 20 motorists had been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, while more than 50 undocumented immigrants were taken into custody pending verification and deportation processes.
Speaking on the scene, Lieutenant General Mthombeni said the operation was part of a province-wide effort to reclaim communities from lawlessness. We are sending a strong message Gauteng is not a playground for criminals he declared. Anyone breaking the law whether it’s behind the wheel or across our borders will be found and arrested. There are no hiding places.
Officers set up roadblocks along major routes in and out of Honeydew, stopping vehicles, testing drivers for alcohol, and conducting background checks. In Cosmo City, tactical units raided several suspected crime hotspots and illegal liquor outlets, seizing unlicensed firearms and alcohol in the process.
Residents who witnessed the operation praised the visible policing effort, saying it restored a sense of safety in areas often plagued by night-time crime. We hardly sleep on weekends because of noise and lawlessness said local resident Thuli Ndlovu. Seeing this kind of action makes us believe the police are taking back our streets.
Mthombeni commended his officers for their dedication and discipline vowing that similar operations will continue across the province every week. “We are not resting not until our communities can live without fear he said.
The operation has since been hailed by police leadership as one of the most successful in recent weeks a testament to Mthombeni aggressive hands-on policing approach that has become his signature across Gauteng crime hotspots.
