Mchunu in hot water as Cele’s testimony exposes meeting with ‘Cat’ Matlala

Political analyst Professor Sipho Seepe says Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is in deep political trouble following former Police Minister Bheki Cele’s explosive testimony before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee. Cele’s revelation that he met with alleged criminal figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has contradicted Mchunu’s earlier claims under oath that he had no such engagement.
According to Seepe, Cele’s testimony has effectively “cornered” Mchunu and raised serious questions about his credibility and truthfulness before the committee. “What Bheki Cele’s evidence has done is to expose glaring inconsistencies in Mchunu’s version of events. This may have serious implications for his integrity as a minister and could damage public confidence in the Police Ministry,” Seepe explained.
During his appearance, Cele admitted to meeting Matlala, stating that their interaction was part of efforts to gather intelligence information. However, Mchunu had previously denied any form of direct contact or association with Matlala. This contradiction, Seepe notes, places the current minister in an increasingly difficult position as the inquiry intensifies.
“The challenge for Mchunu now is not only political but ethical,” Seepe added. “He must account for why his version of events differs so starkly from that of his predecessor, especially when both men served in the same security cluster.”
The revelations come as the Madlanga Commission continues to unravel a complex web of alleged political interference, police corruption, and misuse of intelligence networks.
With mounting public pressure and scrutiny from MPs, Seepe says Mchunu will need to provide a clear and consistent account to salvage his credibility.
