Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has shed light on his decision to substitute playmaker Marcelo Allende during their recent match, saying it was part of his plan to give other midfielders an opportunity to contribute.

“I decided to take Allende out, not that he was bad, but I wanted to give Jayden [Adams] and also [Bathusi] Aubaas opportunity to play,” Cardoso explained after the game.Allende, who has been one of Sundowns’ most consistent performers, rarely misses a game for the Brazilians. Known for his creative flair and work rate, the Chilean international has become central to the club’s attacking rhythm under Cardoso. However, the coach insists that squad rotation is vital, especially with the club competing in multiple tournaments.

“We have a lot of quality in our squad, and everyone deserves to play,” Cardoso said. “Managing minutes is crucial if we want to remain fresh and competitive throughout the season. Jayden and Aubaas have been working hard in training, so it was important to give them the opportunity to show what they can bring.”

Cardoso’s comments highlight a key aspect of Sundowns’ philosophy — maintaining high intensity and performance levels by keeping the entire squad engaged. His rotation strategy also reflects the club’s long-term approach to squad depth and player development.

Despite being taken off, Allende’s influence in midfield remains undisputed. His partnership with Teboho Mokoena and Lucas Ribeiro Costa has been instrumental in helping Sundowns dominate possession and dictate the tempo in most of their games.

As the CAF Champions League and domestic fixtures pile up, fans can expect more tactical adjustments from Cardoso as he seeks to balance fitness, form, and competition.
