Malema clarifies his relationship with General Sibiya

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has confirmed that he possesses the contact details of several high-ranking police officials, including suspended Deputy National Commissioner Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya.
Speaking during a media briefing, Malema stated that while he has General Sibiya’s number — as well as those of other generals, ministers, and deputy ministers — their relationship is not personal. “I can’t claim to be General Sibiya’s friend, and he can’t claim to be mine,” Malema said. “But I can contact him if there’s an issue related to policing or national security matters.”
Malema’s remarks come amid growing tensions between political leaders and senior police officials following ongoing testimonies before Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating corruption and political interference within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The EFF leader said it is not unusual for him to have direct communication with senior figures in the state, stressing that such communication should not be misconstrued as personal alliances or collusion. “We speak to ministers and generals because we are political leaders who deal with issues affecting the people daily,” he explained.
Observers say Malema’s statement may reignite debate about political influence over law enforcement institutions, particularly at a time when allegations of interference and corruption have rocked SAPS leadership. The confirmation also follows weeks of testimony from senior police figures, including General Sibiya, who has accused top officials of sabotage and internal manipulation within the force.
As Parliament’s hearings continue, Malema’s comments highlight the blurred lines between political oversight and operational independence in South Africa’s policing environment.
