JMPD, Hawks bust gold refinery linked to zama zama syndicates in Booysens

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), in collaboration with the Hawks and two private security companies, has dismantled a gold refinery in Booysens connected to Zama Zama syndicates.
The facility, while legally registered to process precious metals, was found to be handling gold-bearing material from illegal miners. Four suspects including three Zama Zamas and the facility’s manager were arrested and face charges under the Precious Metals Act, as well as bribery charges after attempting to pay R20 000 to avoid arrest.
Authorities seized gold and gold-bearing material valued at around R1 million. Acting JMPD Chief Eldred Fortein said the operation “sends a clear message” that law enforcement is targeting the entire illegal mining value chain, not just miners underground.
The suspects are due to appear in court as the investigation continues, with the refinery now closed pending further action.
