Former Minister of Police Bheki Cele has publicly apologised to all those who were negatively affected by his actions during his tenure as a public official. Cele made the apology while addressing the media at the end of his appearance before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee in Cape Town.

Cele, who served as Police Minister until earlier this year, said his apology was driven by reflection and accountability. “If, in the course of doing my work, I offended or harmed anyone, I apologise. It was never my intention to hurt people, but to serve the country to the best of my ability,” he told reporters.

His statement came moments after a tense session before the committee probing corruption, political interference, and misconduct within the South African Police Service (SAPS). Cele’s testimony has drawn significant attention, with MPs questioning his relationship with alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and other controversial actions during his tenure.

Observers say Cele’s apology could be seen as an attempt to soften public perception following weeks of scrutiny and heated exchanges in Parliament. Political analyst Sandile Swana noted that while the apology was “a good gesture,” it would need to be followed by accountability measures to carry real weight.

Cele concluded by saying that serving the country had been an honour, despite the challenges and criticism he faced. “Leadership is never easy,” he added, “but what matters most is learning from the past.”The parliamentary hearings are set to continue this week, with more high-profile witnesses expected to testify.
