KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has issued a stern warning to those who threaten or attack police officers, saying law enforcement will not hesitate to defend themselves. Speaking during the launch of the festive season safety campaign in KwaZulu-Natal, Mkhwanazi made it clear that officers have a duty to protect both themselves and the public.

“Anyone who fights with police officers must expect a fight back, and that is just how it is,” said Mkhwanazi, warning criminals that the police will respond firmly to any form of violence. His comments come as the province braces for an expected increase in crime over the holiday period, including robberies, road accidents, and public disorder incidents.

Mkhwanazi emphasised that the South African Police Service (SAPS) will deploy additional officers across key hotspots and conduct high-visibility patrols to maintain order and ensure public safety. “We will be out in full force. Criminals must know there is no place to hide,” he said.

The safety campaign, launched in Durban, focuses on curbing contact crimes, reducing fatalities on the roads, and protecting tourists and businesses during the busy season. Mkhwanazi also appealed to communities to work hand in hand with law enforcement by reporting criminal activity and refraining from obstructing police operations.

Security experts have welcomed the commissioner’s tough stance, saying it sends a strong message to criminals who increasingly target officers in ambushes and violent attacks. “The safety of law enforcement is central to public safety. If police are under siege, so is society,” said one analyst.

As the festive season approaches, authorities are urging South Africans to remain vigilant and cooperative during police operations.
