‘Don’t threaten me’ — Bheki Cele snaps at MK Party’s David Skosana

1

Tensions flared at Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee when MK Party MP David Skosana and former Police Minister Bheki Cele clashed during Cele’s testimony on alleged corruption and political interference within the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The heated exchange began when Skosana pressed Cele to confirm whether his statements were made under oath. “Are you saying that under oath?” Skosana asked pointedly. Cele, visibly irritated, fired back: “Don’t threaten me about the oath.”

Skosana then reminded the former minister of his position: “Remember, I am a Member of Parliament.” But Cele quickly shot back with a sharp retort that drew murmurs in the chamber: “I have been in Parliament far long before you. I know Parliament better than you.”

The tense moment underscored the growing friction within the committee as MPs interrogate Cele’s dealings with alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and other controversial matters.

Committee Chairperson Xola Nqola was eventually forced to intervene, calling for calm and urging both parties to maintain decorum in line with parliamentary rules.Cele, who served as Police Minister until earlier this year, remains a central figure in the ongoing inquiry, which has seen explosive testimony about internal SAPS divisions, political interference, and questionable alliances with criminal figures.

As the inquiry continues, MPs are expected to summon additional witnesses linked to the Matlala network and probe further into the extent of high-level misconduct.
