Bheki Cele unexpected response on why he accepted staying at Matlala’s house

During the Ad Hoc Committee hearings into alleged corruption and political interference within the South African Police Service (SAPS), ANC MP Xola Nqola questioned former Police Minister Bheki Cele about his relationship with controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

Nqola asked whether Cele found it inappropriate or concerning that a man under investigation for serious crimes had offered him accommodation and hospitality. “Did it not concern you that a stranger [Matlala] offered that you live at his place and show you hospitality?” Nqola pressed.

Cele, however, defended his decision, stating that he saw nothing wrong with accepting Matlala’s offer since he was no longer a government official at the time. “No, I took it,” Cele replied firmly. “I am not in government, so if I’m in Pretoria, I spend my money. If I were in government, I would have gone and declared, but I declare to nobody now.”

His response sparked visible reactions in the committee, with some MPs exchanging glances as questions lingered about the ethical implications of the relationship. Matlala, who has been implicated in multiple investigations, including fraud and corruption allegations, remains a central figure in the inquiry.

The hearings have repeatedly highlighted how political figures and senior police officials allegedly interacted with individuals facing criminal charges, raising questions about accountability and influence within the state security apparatus.

As proceedings continue, Cele’s testimony has become one of the most scrutinised, with MPs seeking clarity on whether his engagements blurred the boundaries between personal association and public responsibility.
