Another 2 DA Leader Resign Last Night

Two Democratic Alliance (DA) Ward Councillors from George in the Western Cape, both serving on the Mayoral Committee, have officially resigned from the party to join the Patriotic Alliance (PA). Their departure marks a major political shake-up in the municipality, triggering two by-elections and leaving the DA without a majority in council.
The councillors’ defection is expected to significantly alter the power dynamics in the George Municipality, where the DA previously held a slim majority. With their exit, the Patriotic Alliance, led by Gayton McKenzie, is poised to strengthen its influence in the region, furthering its growing presence across Western Cape municipalities.
Local political observers say the timing of the resignations could not have been worse for the DA, as internal divisions and coalition strains continue to challenge the party’s grip on several key municipalities. The two councillors, whose names are yet to be formally announced by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), were reportedly frustrated by internal party politics and what they described as a lack of support for service delivery initiatives.
A senior DA official in George confirmed the resignations, expressing disappointment at the councillors’ move. “Their departure is unfortunate, but we remain committed to serving the residents of George and will contest the by-elections vigorously,” the official said.Meanwhile, the Patriotic Alliance has welcomed the new members, calling it “a sign that the tide is turning” and promising to bring stability and accountability to the municipality.
The upcoming by-elections are expected to be closely contested, with both parties viewing George as a crucial battleground ahead of the next local government elections.
