ANC MP questions move to summon Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala before Parliament

ANC MP Khusela Diko has raised a pointed question regarding the Ad Hoc Committee’s process to bring alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala to testify before Parliament. Her inquiry comes amid ongoing discussions about whether key witnesses should be summoned as part of the investigation into KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s explosive allegations of political interference and criminal infiltration in the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Diko’s intervention highlights the committee’s growing focus on firsthand testimony from individuals at the centre of the controversy. She questioned how Parliament intends to secure Matlala’s appearance, given his current legal situation and the potential security risks involved. “We must be clear about the framework guiding such summonses,” Diko reportedly said, emphasising that due process and parliamentary protocols must be upheld throughout the inquiry.

The call for Matlala’s testimony has gained traction following the revelations by both former Police Minister Bheki Cele and current Minister Senzo Mchunu, who were questioned extensively about their alleged communications and dealings with Matlala. His name has repeatedly surfaced in connection with allegations of corruption, interference, and links to high-ranking police officials.

Committee members are now deliberating on how best to proceed without compromising ongoing investigations. “If Parliament can get direct input from individuals like Matlala, it could help separate fact from speculation,” noted political analyst Professor Dirk Kotze.

As proceedings intensify, Diko’s question underscores the growing pressure on the Ad Hoc Committee to ensure accountability, transparency, and fairness in its handling of one of the most explosive inquiries in recent years.
