A family in Mamelodi East, Tshwane, is reeling from grief after four of its members allegedly drowned during a cleansing ceremony at Delfie Quarry Dam. The heartbreaking incident has left relatives and the wider community in disbelief.
Speaking to the media, 56-year-old Sophie Ntuli Mathibela, the aunt of the deceased, described the immense pain the family is going through. “We are traumatised, weak, and in great shock,” she said. “It is hard to accept what has happened. We never imagined the ceremony would end in such tragedy.”According to initial reports, the four family members had gathered at the dam for a traditional cleansing ritual when the drowning occurred.
Details surrounding how events unfolded remain unclear, with authorities still investigating the circumstances. Police have yet to confirm whether any foul play is suspected.Community members have expressed deep sympathy, with many visiting the family home to offer support.
Social media platforms have also been flooded with messages of condolence and prayers for the grieving family. The Delfie Quarry Dam, though often used for recreational and spiritual purposes, has previously been flagged as dangerous due to its deep waters and unpredictable currents.
Residents have urged authorities to improve safety measures around such water bodies to prevent further tragedies. As the family prepares for the funeral arrangements, they are calling on the public to keep them in their thoughts during this painful time. “It will take us a long time to heal,” Mathibela added.
