SAPS Issues Stern Warning to Communities

As the South African Police Service (SAPS) gears up for the official launch of its safer festive season operations today, National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has issued a stern warning to individuals who undermine law enforcement authority.

General Masemola cautioned that the SAPS will adopt a zero-tolerance approach toward anyone who attempts to obstruct police officers in the execution of their duties. He said the safety of police officers remains a top priority, and attacks on law enforcement personnel will be treated as serious offences.“An attack on a police officer is an attack on the state and also an attack on national security,” Masemola said.

He added that the SAPS has seen a worrying rise in incidents where communities interfere with police operations or confront officers during arrests. “Anyone who tries to stop police officers in carrying out their mandate in preventing and combating crime will be met with the full might of the law,” he warned.

The safer festive season campaign aims to increase police visibility across the country during the high-crime holiday period. Focus areas include drunk driving, gender-based violence, armed robberies, and illegal firearm possession. The initiative also seeks to strengthen partnerships between SAPS and communities to ensure safer public spaces.

General Masemola urged South Africans to support law enforcement efforts rather than hinder them. “We call on all citizens to work with us — to report crime, to protect officers, and to stand united in ensuring safety for all.”
