A sombre atmosphere has engulfed Tiyani Village in the Collins Chabane Local Municipality, Limpopo, where hundreds of mourners have gathered at the Roman Tigers Sports Ground for the mass funeral of twelve congregants who tragically lost their lives in a horrific accident on the R81 near Ga-Sekgopo.

The victims were members of a local church travelling together when their taxi collided with another vehicle on Sunday, 28 September 2025. Among the deceased were adults and children, including seven-year-old Kayanenene Sarila, whose passing has deeply shaken the community.

The names of those who perished in the accident have been confirmed as: Grace Ntsenyani, Rose Mawila, Collen Maluleke (the taxi driver), Livhuwani Sarila, Kayanenene Sarila, Rose Mnyuku, Agnes Sambo, Rose Maswanganyi, Joyce Chauke, Gift Ngwenyama, Masingita Mabodze, and Daphney Mabasa.

Family members, friends, church leaders, and government officials have gathered to pay their final respects. Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba is expected to attend, alongside local leaders who have expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families.

Community members have described the deceased as humble, God-fearing individuals who contributed greatly to their church and neighbourhood. “This is not just a loss to their families, but to the entire community,” said one mourner, fighting back tears.

The Limpopo Department of Transport has since urged motorists to exercise caution on the R81, which has become notorious for fatal accidents. Authorities have also pledged to support the families with counselling and funeral assistance.

As the coffins lie side by side under white tents, the sound of hymns and weeping fills the air — a painful reminder of how one moment can change so many lives forever.
