The Rustenburg community has been left reeling after the brutal killing of 21-year-old Onalenna Selebogo in a flat in the city’s central area.According to police reports, Selebogo’s lifeless body was discovered wrapped in bed sheets, bearing multiple stab wounds to her neck. The grim discovery has sent shockwaves through the community, with residents expressing outrage over the senseless act of violence.

The suspect, identified as Walter Tshehlo, allegedly fled the scene shortly after the incident. However, he later handed himself over to police. North West police confirmed that Tshehlo has been formally charged with murder and is currently in custody. His bail hearing is scheduled for 18 August 2025.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh urged the public to allow the legal process to take its course. “We are committed to ensuring that justice is served in this matter. Gender-based violence remains a serious concern, and we will continue to work tirelessly to protect vulnerable members of our communities,” she said.

The incident adds to growing calls for harsher measures against perpetrators of femicide in South Africa, a country where violence against women remains alarmingly prevalent.
