New Way to Get Your ID in Minutes Shocks South Africans Without Queues

In a major step towards modernising public services, the Department of Home Affairs has teamed up with Capitec and FNB to make applying for Smart ID cards and passports faster and more convenient than ever before.
For the first time, South Africans will be able to submit applications directly through their banking apps — a move aimed at cutting down on long queues and saving valuable time. This service builds on the department’s existing partnerships with other banks, but the inclusion of Capitec and FNB is expected to significantly expand its reach.
Currently, only about 30 bank branches nationwide are equipped to process Smart IDs and passports through the Home Affairs system. However, under the new plan, this number is set to grow dramatically, with a target of 1,000 participating branches by 2029.
Minister of Home Affairs Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi described the development as a “game changer” in delivering essential services more efficiently. “We are bringing government closer to the people, making it possible to apply for these important documents with just a few clicks,” he said.
Capitec and FNB customers will soon receive in-app updates detailing when and how the service will be rolled out in their areas. Once applied for, clients will be able to book a convenient slot at their chosen bank branch to capture biometrics and finalise the process.
This partnership could mark the end of the notorious Home Affairs queues, with many South Africans welcoming the move as long overdue.
